Lake Shetek State Park sits on the shores of the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota, a 1,109-acre retreat in Murray County where prairie meets water in a landscape most people don’t expect to find in this part of the state. The park wraps around Lake Shetek’s southern bays, with wooded islands, marshlands, and open grasslands creating a surprisingly diverse setting for a region dominated by farmland.

The lake itself is the main draw. Anglers come for walleye, northern pike, and bullhead, while the swimming beach offers a welcome cool-down during hot prairie summers. A network of trails winds through oak woodlands and restored tallgrass prairie — excellent for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing once the snow arrives. Birders should bring binoculars: the mix of water, prairie, and timber attracts pelicans, herons, and western species that rarely show up in eastern Minnesota parks.

The park has a campground with both electric and non-electric sites, plus a group camp for larger gatherings. A few camper cabins are available for those who prefer a roof overhead. Sites near the lake fill fast on summer weekends, so reservations are worth planning ahead.

Late June through August is peak season for swimming and fishing, but September brings quieter trails and golden prairie grasses that make for some of the best walking of the year. The Luce Line State Trail connects nearby, extending your options if you’re looking to cover more ground.
