Lake Maria State Park offers a rare pocket of Big Woods wilderness in Wright County, Minnesota, preserving 1,475 acres of rolling hardwood hills, prairie remnants, and quiet lakes that recall what much of southern Minnesota looked like before European settlement. This is one of the few places in the state where you can still walk through mature stands of maple, basswood, and oak that once blanketed the region.

The park’s trail system winds through varied terrain — dense forest gives way to open grassland, and hilltop overlooks reward hikers with long views across the surrounding countryside. In fall, the hardwood canopy puts on one of the best color shows in central Minnesota. Spring brings wildflower blooms to the forest floor, including trillium, hepatica, and bloodroot. Horseback riding trails thread through the western portion of the park, and cross-country skiing takes over the trail network in winter. Fishing is available on Lake Maria itself, though the park’s real draw is the sense of solitude — visitor counts stay low compared to more well-known state parks.

Camping options include backpack-in sites that sit nestled among the trees, giving the experience a more remote feel than a typical state park car camp. Summer weekends are pleasant but can bring humidity; September and October offer the most comfortable conditions and the best scenery.
