The Lahontan National Fish Hatchery Complex operates the Hatchery and the Marble Bluff Fish Facility. The complex plans and implements coordinated management and recovery activities for the endangered Cui-ui of Pyramid Lake and threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout within the Interior Basins Ecoregion. Marble Bluff Fish Facility is critical to moving the endangered Cui ui around the dam. A "fish lock" acts like an elevator that brings the fish up to the river so that they can spawn in the river.

Lahontan State Recreation Area stretches across nearly 29,000 acres of high desert landscape in Churchill and Lyon Counties, where the Carson River feeds into Lahontan Reservoir. This is one of Nevada’s largest and most underappreciated outdoor destinations — a sprawling oasis of blue water set against sagebrush hills and wide-open sky that feels a world away from the neon of Reno and Las Vegas.

The reservoir itself is the main draw, offering 69 miles of shoreline for boating, waterskiing, kayaking, and fishing. Anglers come for walleye, white bass, and catfish, with spring and fall producing the best catches. Sandy beaches along the southern shore make for surprisingly good swimming during the hot summer months, and the calm coves are ideal for paddleboarding.

Camping is available at multiple sites around the reservoir, ranging from developed spots with shade ramadas and restrooms to primitive shoreline camping where you can park right at the water’s edge. Summer weekends draw crowds from Fallon and Reno, but midweek visitors often have entire stretches of beach to themselves.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when water levels are highest and daytime temperatures make the reservoir irresistible. Winter brings solitude, migratory birds, and dramatic desert light for photographers willing to brave the cold.

Come prepared with sun protection, plenty of water, and firewood if you plan to camp — amenities are limited, and the nearest full-service town is Fallon, about 14 miles west.
