Tucked into the Laurel Highlands of Somerset County, Kooser State Park is a 250-acre retreat that has welcomed visitors since 1922, making it one of Pennsylvania’s oldest state parks. What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in character — this is a park built for slowing down.

Kooser Lake, a small and peaceful impoundment fed by Kooser Run, anchors the park. The lake is open for non-powered boating and fishing, with bass, bluegill, and trout drawing anglers throughout the season. A sandy beach area provides a refreshing swimming spot during summer months, and the surrounding picnic grounds are shaded by a mature hemlock and hardwood forest that feels far removed from the everyday.

Hiking trails wind through the woods and connect to the larger Laurel Highlands Trail system, giving day-hikers and backpackers alike access to some of the best ridge-walking in western Pennsylvania. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over in winter, when the park’s elevation keeps a reliable snow cover.

Camping details aren’t confirmed at this time, but the park has historically offered rustic cabins and tent sites — check with Pennsylvania DCNR for current availability.

The best time to visit is late September through mid-October, when the Laurel Highlands put on one of the state’s finest fall color displays. Summer weekdays are also ideal for a quieter experience at the lake.

Kooser State Park rewards those who seek out Pennsylvania’s smaller, less-trafficked gems.
