Spruce Run Recreation Area sits along the shores of New Jersey’s third-largest reservoir in Hunterdon County, where Clinton and Union Townships meet. Established in 1974, this state park centers on the 1,290-acre Spruce Run Reservoir, making it one of the Garden State’s premier destinations for water-based recreation.
The reservoir is the main draw here. Boating, sailing, windsurfing, and fishing dominate warm-weather months, with the wide-open water attracting sailors who appreciate consistent winds rolling across the valley. Anglers target largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, and trout—the reservoir is regularly stocked and produces solid catches, particularly in spring and fall. A boat launch provides easy access, though motors are limited to electric or low-horsepower to keep the water calm for all users.
Beyond the shoreline, the park offers swimming at a guarded beach during summer, along with picnic areas scattered beneath mature hardwoods. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding woods and meadows, providing views back across the water. Birdwatchers will find the reservoir’s edges productive, especially during spring and fall migration when shorebirds and waterfowl pass through.
The best time to visit is late May through September for swimming and full water access, though spring and autumn bring excellent fishing and quieter trails. Summer weekends fill up fast—arrive early to secure a good spot.
Located just off Interstate 78, Spruce Run is an easy reach from much of northern and central New Jersey, making it a reliable day trip when you need open water and green space without a long drive.
