Hop River State Park Trail
Connecticut (Hartford, Tolland County)
Hop River State Park Trail stretches through the rolling countryside of Hartford and Tolland County, Connecticut, following the path of a former railroad corridor. This linear park transforms a piece of industrial history into a peaceful multiuse trail that winds through woodlands, wetlands, and quiet rural landscapes east of Hartford.
The trail’s crushed-stone surface runs roughly 20 miles, making it one of Connecticut’s longer rail trails and a standout for cyclists, joggers, and walkers seeking distance without road crossings or steep grades. The gentle, flat terrain makes it accessible for families and casual riders, while the length satisfies more ambitious outings. In fall, the corridor becomes a tunnel of New England color — maples and oaks arch overhead in brilliant reds and golds that draw visitors from across the region.
Birdwatchers will find the wetland sections particularly rewarding, with herons, warblers, and red-tailed hawks frequently spotted along the route. The trail passes through the towns of Manchester, Bolton, Coventry, and Andover, offering occasional access to local shops and restaurants for mid-ride stops.
Camping is not available within the trail corridor itself, but nearby options at Mashamoquet Brook and Shenipsit State Forests provide overnight stays for those extending their visit.
The best time to explore is late September through mid-October for peak foliage, or late spring when wildflowers line the trail edges and temperatures stay comfortable. Summer visits work well for early morning rides before midday humidity sets in.
