Heyburn State Park
Plummer, Idaho (Benewah County)
Heyburn State Park sits along the southern shores of Chatcolet and Benewah lakes near Plummer, Idaho, spreading across 8,106 acres of forested hills, marshlands, and lakefront shoreline in Benewah County. As Idaho’s oldest state park, Heyburn holds a distinct place in the state’s outdoor heritage and remains one of the most visited destinations in the northern panhandle region.
The park’s defining feature is its water access. Chatcolet Lake and the connected St. Joe River corridor offer excellent fishing for bass, crappie, and perch, while the calm, sheltered bays are ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Several boat launches make it easy to get on the water. On land, over 30 miles of trails wind through mixed conifer forests and open meadows, popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Birdwatchers will find the marshy inlets especially rewarding — osprey, bald eagles, and great blue herons are common sightings.
Camping options range from developed sites with full hookups to more rustic spots closer to the water. Three separate campground areas accommodate tents, RVs, and groups, and several cottages are available for those who prefer a roof overhead. Reservations are strongly recommended during summer months.
The best time to visit is June through September, when lake temperatures are comfortable for swimming and the trails are dry. Fall brings quieter crowds and vivid color along the hillsides. With a 4.6-star rating across 923 reviews, Heyburn consistently earns praise for its scenery, well-maintained facilities, and peaceful atmosphere.
