Glacial Lakes State Park sits among the rolling hills and prairie potholes of Pope County, Minnesota, where the Great Plains meet the eastern hardwood forests. Spanning 1,857 acres, this park preserves one of the state’s finest examples of undisturbed prairie — a landscape that once covered millions of acres but now survives in only scattered remnants.

The park’s terrain was sculpted by glaciers thousands of years ago, leaving behind a striking mix of steep, kame-dotted hills and quiet kettle lakes. Mountain Lake and Signalness Lake anchor the park’s water recreation, offering swimming, canoeing, and fishing for panfish and bass. Several miles of trails wind through native prairie grasses and wildflowers, making this one of the best spots in western Minnesota for hiking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing when snow arrives.

Birdwatchers will find plenty to watch here — the prairie habitat supports species like western meadowlarks, dickcissels, and bobolinks that are increasingly hard to find elsewhere in the state. White-tailed deer and red foxes are common sightings along the trails at dawn and dusk.

Summer brings the fullest experience, with prairie wildflowers peaking from June through August, but fall offers its own reward as the hardwood groves turn color against golden grasslands. Spring migrants pass through in April and May.
