Tucked along the banks of the Rainy River in Koochiching County, Franz Jevne State Park offers 118 acres of quiet northern Minnesota wilderness just minutes from the Canadian border. This compact park punches above its weight, delivering old-growth white pine forest, river views, and a sense of solitude that larger parks struggle to match.

The Rainy River frontage is the main draw here. Anglers come for walleye, sauger, and northern pike — the river is one of Minnesota’s premier fishing stretches, and the park provides direct bank access without needing a boat launch. In spring, the sturgeon run draws visitors hoping to spot these ancient fish rolling near the surface.

Hiking trails wind through stands of towering white and red pine, some of the last old-growth remnants in the region. The forest floor is thick with ferns and wildflowers in summer, and the canopy provides welcome shade on warm days. Birdwatchers should keep eyes open for bald eagles, great blue herons, and warblers migrating through the river corridor.

Franz Jevne is a day-use park, so plan overnight stays in nearby International Falls or at one of the area’s private campgrounds. The park works well as a peaceful stop while exploring Voyageurs National Park, located roughly 30 miles east.

Visit from late May through September for the best conditions. Summer brings long northern days and excellent fishing, while early fall transforms the hardwoods into a blaze of color against the evergreen backdrop. Come here when you want the north woods without the crowds.
