This state-designated scenic byway traces a path through dense hardwood forests, past tumbling creeks, and along ridgelines that open to sweeping views of the southern Appalachian peaks.

The star attraction is Whitewater Falls, the highest waterfall east of the Rockies, where water plunges over 400 feet in a thundering cascade framed by ancient rock and lush rhododendron. Nearby, Lake Jocassee’s crystalline waters shimmer in the valley below, and the Chattooga River — famous from the film *Deliverance* — carves through a protected wild and scenic corridor.

Stop at overlooks to photograph layered mountain ridges fading into blue haze. Hikers will find trailheads leading to lesser-known falls and quiet swimming holes. Small communities along the route offer local crafts and mountain hospitality.

Visit in mid-October for peak fall color, when the canopy erupts in crimson and gold. Spring brings wildflowers and rushing water from snowmelt. Allow two to three hours for the drive, longer if you plan to hike or linger at the falls.
