Fort Ridgely State Park sits where Minnesota’s prairie meets the wooded Minnesota River Valley, spreading across 537 acres in Nicollet and Renville Counties. The park preserves the ruins of a frontier military fort established in 1853, which played a central role during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Stone foundations, interpretive markers, and a restored commissary building bring that complex history to life along self-guided walking paths.

Beyond the historic site, the park offers a surprisingly varied landscape. Deep ravines cut through the river bluffs, creating sheltered hardwood forests that blaze with color in autumn. Nine miles of hiking trails wind through these wooded coulees and along open prairie ridges, with several routes leading to overlooks above the Minnesota River Valley. In winter, those same trails serve cross-country skiers and snowshoers, while a chalet near the campground provides a warming shelter.

The park’s nine-hole golf course is an unexpected draw — one of the few courses nestled inside a state park, with fairways carved through mature timber. Horseback riders have access to dedicated equestrian trails and a campground with horse-friendly facilities.

The main campground offers both electric and rustic sites tucked among the trees, with showers and a dump station available seasonally. Spring brings wildflower displays along the ravine trails, while summer weekends often feature living history programs at the fort site.
