Fair Haven Beach State Park

Tucked along the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario in New York’s Finger Lakes region, Fair Haven Beach State Park spans 1,141 acres of bluffs, wetlands, and sandy shoreline that have drawn visitors since the park’s establishment in 1928. What sets Fair Haven apart is its dramatic landscape — towering lakeside bluffs give way to a broad, sandy beach, while Sterling Pond and Sterling Creek wind through wooded uplands just inland.

Swimming is the headliner here. The protected bay creates calmer waters than much of Lake Ontario’s open coast, making it a reliable spot for families. Beyond the beach, the park offers hiking trails through mixed hardwood forests, fishing for bass and panfish in Sterling Pond, and birding along the wetland edges where herons and migratory shorebirds frequent the marshy inlets. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over the trail network.

The park operates campgrounds with tent and RV sites nestled among the trees, plus rental cabins for those who prefer a roof overhead. Waterfront sites fill fast during peak summer weekends, so booking early is strongly recommended.

The best window to visit runs from late June through early September, when Lake Ontario’s waters warm enough for comfortable swimming and the beach facilities are fully staffed. Shoulder months — May and October — reward visitors with quieter trails and fall color that lights up the bluffs.
