Eagle Landing State Park
Haddam, Connecticut (Middlesex County)
Tucked along the banks of the Connecticut River in Haddam, Eagle Landing State Park packs a surprising amount of charm into its 16 acres. This small but well-loved Middlesex County park sits right where the Chester-Haddam Ferry — one of the oldest continuously operating ferry crossings in the country — docks on the east side, making it a natural stopping point for road-trippers exploring the lower Connecticut River Valley.
The park’s riverside setting is its defining feature. A grassy picnic area slopes down toward the water, offering unobstructed views of the river and the wooded hills beyond. Bring a blanket and lunch — the picnic tables and open green space make this one of the better casual lunch spots along Route 9 corridor. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding here, especially during winter months when bald eagles congregate along the Connecticut River to feed in areas of open water, a spectacle that gives the park its name.
Fishing from the riverbank is popular, and kayakers use the launch area to access the Connecticut River’s calmer stretches. The park works well as a leg-stretcher during a longer drive or as a destination for a relaxed afternoon outdoors.
With a 4.4 rating from 141 visitors, Eagle Landing consistently earns praise for its peaceful atmosphere and river views. Late fall through early spring is prime time for eagle sightings, while summer brings the ferry, picnickers, and golden afternoon light on the water. No camping facilities are available on-site.
