Duck Lake

Tucked into the quiet woods of Washington County, Duck Lake stretches across more than 25,000 acres of undeveloped Maine wilderness near the town of Hancock. This state park offers one of Downeast Maine’s largest contiguous blocks of public land, where moose outnumber people and the lake itself sits glassy and still most mornings, reflecting nothing but spruce and sky.

Duck Lake is a destination for paddlers, anglers, and anyone looking to disappear into genuine backcountry without a long drive from the coast. The lake supports healthy populations of landlocked salmon and brook trout, making it a reliable spot for both fly fishing and spin casting from spring through early fall. Canoeists and kayakers can explore miles of undeveloped shoreline, while the surrounding forests offer unmarked trails for hiking and wildlife observation — expect to spot loons, bald eagles, and white-tailed deer.

The best time to visit is late May through October, when access roads are reliably passable and the fishing is at its peak. Summer brings long daylight hours and warm-enough swimming, though the water stays brisk. Come prepared for blackflies in June.
