Crab Island State Park
New York (Thousand Islands County)
Tucked among the waterways of Thousand Islands County, Crab Island State Park offers 40 acres of island charm on the St. Lawrence River. Established in 1988, this compact state park rewards visitors with a genuine Thousand Islands experience — rocky shorelines, river views that stretch for miles, and the kind of quiet you only find when you’re surrounded by water.
Getting here is part of the adventure. Accessible by boat, Crab Island feels wonderfully removed from the mainland bustle. Kayakers and canoeists often make it a destination paddle, while boaters pull up to explore the shoreline and take in views of the river’s famous granite islands dotting the horizon.
The park is well-suited for picnicking, fishing, and wildlife watching. Anglers can cast for smallmouth bass, northern pike, and walleye in the surrounding waters — some of the best freshwater fishing in the Northeast. Birders will appreciate the island’s position along migratory flyways, where herons, ospreys, and kingfishers are regular visitors.
The best time to visit is late June through early September, when river conditions are calmest and water temperatures are comfortable for swimming. Spring and fall bring fewer visitors and excellent fishing, though weather on the river can turn quickly.
Whether you’re planning a day trip by kayak or anchoring your boat for an afternoon of exploring, Crab Island State Park delivers a low-key, off-the-beaten-path slice of the Thousand Islands that larger parks in the region can’t quite match.
