Collier-Seminole State Park sits where the western Everglades meet the mangrove coast, offering one of Southwest Florida’s most distinctive natural experiences across its 6,430 acres. Established in 1947, the park preserves a rare subtropical landscape where salt marshes, tropical hardwood hammocks, and cypress swamps converge — a meeting of ecosystems you won’t find anywhere else in the state park system.

The park’s centerpiece is its 13.6-mile canoe and kayak trail winding through a mangrove wilderness out to the Ten Thousand Islands. Paddlers regularly spot manatees, dolphins, and roseate spoonbills along this waterway, which ranks among Florida’s best flatwater paddling routes. On land, a 6.5-mile hiking trail loops through tropical hammock forest where royal palms tower overhead — a landscape that feels more Caribbean than continental U.S.

History buffs will appreciate the Bay City Walking Dredge on display near the entrance, a massive machine used to build the Tamiami Trail through the Everglades in the 1920s. It’s a striking reminder of the engineering — and ecological cost — of taming this wilderness.

The full-facility campground offers 97 sites with electric and water hookups, shaded by mature tropical vegetation. Sites fill quickly during winter dry season, so book early for visits between December and March — the ideal window when humidity drops, mosquitoes thin out, and migratory birds pack the waterways.

Summer visits are possible but come prepared: bring serious insect repellent and expect afternoon thunderstorms. The trade-off is near-solitude on trails that winter crowds never allow.
