Burr Oak State Park
Ohio (Athens, Morgan County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio where Athens and Morgan counties meet, Burr Oak State Park sprawls across 2,593 acres of heavily forested Appalachian foothills. The park centers on Burr Oak Lake, a 664-acre reservoir that curves through narrow hollows, creating a shoreline so irregular it feels more like a series of hidden coves than a single body of water.
What sets Burr Oak apart is its lodge — one of only a handful of state park lodges in Ohio. Perched on a ridge overlooking the lake, Burr Oak Lodge offers comfortable rooms and a dining room with panoramic views, making this one of the few Ohio parks where you can enjoy genuine backcountry scenery without roughing it.
For those who prefer tent stakes to turndown service, the park offers family campgrounds with electric hookups near the lake. Hiking trails wind through oak-hickory forests across more than 30 miles of terrain, ranging from easy lakeside strolls to rugged ridgeline climbs. The lake supports fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish, and a public beach opens for swimming in summer. Boating is permitted with electric motors, keeping the water quiet and the atmosphere peaceful.
Fall is the standout season here — the surrounding hardwood forests ignite in October, and the winding lake reflects it all. Spring wildflower displays along the trails are equally worth the drive. Summer brings the fullest slate of activities, but shoulder seasons reward visitors with solitude and cooler temperatures on the trails.
