Battle of Lexington State Historic Site preserves the grounds where one of the most unusual engagements of the Civil War unfolded in September 1861. Known as the “Battle of the Hemp Bales,” Confederate forces under General Sterling Price rolled soaked hemp bales ahead of their advance as movable breastworks, eventually forcing the surrender of Colonel James Mulligan’s Union garrison.
