Garnet Winter Trails offers over 80 miles of groomed and ungroomed routes through Montana‘s Garnet Mountain range, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The 32-mile Garnet National Winter Recreation Trail serves as the main corridor, connecting a network of paths suitable for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

The historic Garnet Ghost Town anchors the area, providing interpretive programs and photography opportunities among well-preserved mining-era structures. Fire lookouts and rustic cabins are available for overnight stays, offering a unique alternative to tent camping during winter months.

Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM lands surrounding the trail system, though deep snow and cold temperatures make winter camping challenging without proper gear. Summer access opens additional dispersed sites throughout the Garnet Range.

Access requires snow-capable vehicles during winter, with trailheads typically reachable from Highway 200 between Missoula and Helena. The area sees significantly fewer visitors than nearby Lolo Pass or Seeley Lake, making it ideal for those seeking solitude.

Best visited December through March for winter recreation, or late spring through fall for dispersed camping and ghost town exploration.
