Baranof Castle Hill State Historic Site
Sitka, Alaska (Southeast Alaska parks County)
Baranof Castle Hill State Historic Site stands on a rocky promontory overlooking Sitka Sound, marking one of the most historically significant spots in Alaska. This is where the formal transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States took place on October 18, 1867 — a moment that reshaped the continent’s political map. Before that, the hill served as the seat of Russian colonial power, home to the residence of Alaska’s Russian governors including Alexander Baranov.
Today, visitors climb a short but steep pathway to a grassy summit where interpretive panels recount centuries of history, from Tlingit occupation through Russian colonization to American acquisition. The panoramic views from the top are stunning — Sitka Sound dotted with islands, the volcanic cone of Mount Edgecumbe rising across the water, and the fishing harbor spread below. It’s one of the best vantage points in Sitka and a rewarding stop that takes roughly 30 minutes to explore thoroughly.
The site is compact and best suited for history buffs, photographers, and anyone wanting to understand Alaska’s layered cultural heritage. There are no camping facilities here, but Sitka offers plenty of lodging options nearby. The hill sits right in downtown Sitka, making it easy to combine with visits to the nearby Sitka National Historical Park and the Alaska Raptor Center.
The best time to visit is May through September, when Southeast Alaska’s weather is mildest and cruise ships bring the town to life. Dress in layers — Sitka’s maritime climate can shift quickly from sunshine to rain within the hour.
