Arthur B. Ripley Desert Woodland State Park protects one of the last remaining Joshua tree and juniper woodlands in the western Antelope Valley, just outside Lancaster in Los Angeles County. Spread across 566 acres of high desert terrain, this quiet park feels worlds away from the sprawl of greater LA — yet sits less than an hour north of the San Fernando Valley.

What makes Ripley truly special is its ancient Joshua trees, some estimated to be hundreds of years old, standing alongside California juniper, buckwheat, and native desert scrub. The landscape offers a raw, unhurried beauty that rewards visitors willing to slow down and explore on foot. Spring wildflower blooms can be spectacular in good rainfall years, painting the desert floor in bursts of gold and purple.

Hiking trails wind through the woodland, offering easy-to-moderate walks suited for families and casual explorers alike.
