Standing on the remote shores of Matagorda Island near Port Lavaca, Texas, this cast-iron lighthouse was built in 1852 to guide ships through Pass Cavallo into Matagorda Bay. During the Civil War, Confederate forces toppled the tower to prevent Union use; it was rebuilt and relocated in 1873. Now deactivated, the lighthouse sits within the Matagorda Island Wildlife Management Area and is not open to the public for climbing. Golden hour provides the best photography light against the coastal backdrop. Nearby, visitors can explore the Matagorda Island State Natural Area for birding and beachcombing, the Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport, and the historic town of Port Lavaca along the bay.
