Standing on the remote shores of Cape Romain, South Carolina, this 1827 lighthouse is one of the oldest surviving light towers on the Southern coast. Built to guide mariners past the treacherous shoals near Bulls Bay, it was replaced by a newer tower in 1858 and deactivated. The octagonal brick structure remains a striking landmark within the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.

The lighthouse is not open to the public and cannot be climbed, but it’s visible by boat from Bulls Bay. Golden hour and early morning offer the best photography conditions against the marsh backdrop. Nearby attractions include the refuge’s pristine barrier islands, exceptional birding at Bulls Island, and the charming village of McClellanville.
