Sky Island Scenic Byway
Arizona
27.2 miles
Rising dramatically from the Sonoran Desert floor near Tucson, the Sky Island Scenic Byway offers one of America’s most remarkable driving experiences. This 27.2-mile National Scenic Byway along Catalina Highway climbs nearly 6,000 feet in elevation, transporting travelers through five distinct ecological zones—the equivalent of driving from Mexico to Canada in under an hour.
The journey begins amid towering saguaro cacti and creosote flats before winding through oak woodlands, pine forests, and finally into the cool alpine environment surrounding Summerhaven. Along the way, dozens of pullouts reveal sweeping vistas of Tucson’s sprawling valley below, while Windy Point offers a particularly stunning panorama that stretches for miles.
Wildlife enthusiasts may spot white-tailed deer, coatimundi, and over 200 bird species. Hikers can explore trails branching into the Pusch Ridge Wilderness, while Summerhaven provides charming shops and restaurants for a well-earned rest.
Allow two to three hours for the round trip, longer if you plan to hike or picnic. Spring and fall deliver ideal temperatures, though summer offers welcome escape from desert heat. Winter occasionally brings snow to the upper elevations, creating a magical contrast to the sun-drenched desert just miles below.
