Winding through the heart of western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the Pisgah Loop Scenic Byway immerses travelers in one of the most stunning forested landscapes in the eastern United States. This state-designated scenic route circles through Pisgah National Forest, where dense hardwood canopies, cascading waterfalls, and sweeping mountain vistas await around every curve.

Along the way, stop at Looking Glass Falls, one of the most photographed waterfalls in the region, or pull over at one of several overlooks for panoramic views of the Blue Ridge escarpment. The Cradle of Forestry, a National Historic Site, tells the story of America’s first forestry school and offers engaging trails through the woods. Sliding Rock, a natural 60-foot waterslide into a chilly mountain pool, is a summertime favorite for families.

The byway passes through a rich tapestry of elevations, meaning wildflowers bloom in spring, rhododendrons burst with color in early summer, and fall foliage transforms the mountains into a blaze of gold and crimson. Winter brings quieter roads and dramatic bare-tree views.

Allow two to three hours for the drive, longer if you plan to hike or explore. Late October offers the most spectacular scenery.
