Black Mountain Rag scenic byway
North Carolina
Named after the beloved old-time fiddle tune born in these mountains, the Black Mountain Rag scenic byway winds through some of North Carolina’s most captivating highland terrain. This state-designated scenic route carries travelers through the rugged beauty of the Black Mountains, home to Mount Mitchell — the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.
Along the drive, expect sweeping panoramas of blue-ridged peaks layered against the horizon, dense forests of Fraser fir and red spruce, and roadside creeks tumbling over moss-covered stone. Pull off at overlooks to take in views that stretch across multiple counties, or stop to explore trailheads leading deeper into the surrounding wilderness. Small mountain communities along the way offer craft shops, local eateries, and a genuine Appalachian welcome.
The byway is stunning year-round, but autumn delivers its finest performance — typically mid-October — when the hardwood canopy erupts in brilliant golds, crimsons, and burnt orange. Spring wildflower season, from late April through May, offers a quieter but equally rewarding experience.
Allow a half day for a leisurely drive with stops for photos, short hikes, and a meal. This is a route best savored slowly, with the windows down and nowhere urgent to be.
