Grand Mesa Scenic Byway
Colorado
63.0 miles
Rising from the Colorado River valley to the summit of the world’s largest flat-topped mountain, the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway delivers 63 miles of dramatic elevation change and breathtaking alpine scenery. This Colorado State Scenic Byway climbs nearly 6,000 feet, transforming the landscape from high desert scrublands to lush aspen groves and dense spruce-fir forests.
At the top, over 300 pristine lakes dot the mesa’s surface, offering incredible fishing opportunities and mirror-like reflections of the surrounding peaks. Pull off at Land’s End Observatory for panoramic views stretching across the Grand Valley to the Book Cliffs and Utah’s La Sal Mountains—a vista spanning four states on clear days.
Wildlife thrives here: watch for mule deer, elk, and wild turkeys along the roadway. In autumn, the mesa erupts in golden aspens, creating one of Colorado’s most spectacular fall color displays. Winter transforms the landscape into a snow-covered wonderland popular with cross-country skiers and snowmobilers.
Best time to visit: Late September for fall foliage; June through October for full access.
Allow: 2-3 hours for the drive, longer if hiking or fishing.
This uncrowded gem rewards travelers seeking authentic Colorado mountain beauty away from the tourist crowds.
