Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway
Colorado
63.0 miles
Rising from the high desert valleys of western Colorado, the Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway climbs to the summit of the world’s largest flat-topped mountain. This 63-mile National Scenic Byway traverses one of Colorado’s most dramatic elevation changes, taking travelers from the orchards and vineyards of Cedaredge through dense aspen and spruce forests to the breathtaking Lands End Observatory perched at over 10,000 feet.
Along the route, more than 300 alpine lakes dot the mesa top, offering exceptional fishing and wildlife viewing. Watch for mule deer, elk, and black bear as you wind through meadows blanketed with wildflowers in summer. The Lands End Observatory delivers panoramic views stretching across the Grand Valley to the Book Cliffs and Utah’s La Sal Mountains—a vista spanning over 100 miles on clear days.
Stop in Cedaredge to explore local wineries and farm stands before your ascent. The mesa top features numerous hiking trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds perfect for extending your adventure.
Best Time to Visit: Late June through early October, when the road is fully open. Fall brings spectacular golden aspen displays.
Allow: 2-3 hours for the drive alone; a full day to explore viewpoints and trails along the way.
