Tucked into Missoula County just west of Missoula, Frenchtown Pond State Park packs a surprising amount of recreation into its compact 41 acres. The park centers on a clear, spring-fed pond formed from a reclaimed gravel pit — a transformation that turned an industrial site into one of western Montana’s most accessible waterfront escapes.

The pond is the main draw, offering warm-water fishing for largemouth bass, rainbow trout, and yellow perch. Unlike many Montana fishing spots that demand a hike or a drift boat, Frenchtown Pond lets you cast a line minutes from the parking area, making it a favorite for families with young anglers. In summer, the calm water is ideal for swimming, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding — no motorized boats allowed, so the surface stays glassy and peaceful.

A network of short trails loops through cottonwood groves and wetland edges, where great blue herons, ospreys, and red-winged blackbirds are regular sightings. Bring binoculars. In winter, the pond freezes solid enough for ice fishing and the trails see cross-country skiers and snowshoers.
