Fish Creek State Park

Tucked into the rugged western slopes of Mineral County, Fish Creek State Park sprawls across 6,200 acres of Montana wilderness where the Clark Fork River corridor meets dense stands of western larch and Douglas fir. This is big-sky backcountry without the crowds — a place where elk herds move through meadows at dawn and the only traffic jam involves a family of white-tailed deer crossing the trail ahead of you.

The park’s terrain follows Fish Creek itself, a cold, clear tributary that cuts through forested canyon land before joining the Clark Fork. Anglers will find native cutthroat trout in the upper reaches, while the lower stretches offer solid fly-fishing for rainbow and brown trout. Hiking trails wind through mixed conifer forests and open ridgelines with views stretching toward the Bitterroot Range. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and wildlife watching round out the warm-weather options, and winter brings snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when the high country fills in.
