Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park

Tucked into the rugged Ozark highlands of Reynolds County, Missouri, Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park spans 8,549 acres of some of the most geologically fascinating terrain in the Midwest. The park’s namesake “shut-ins” are ancient igneous rock formations where the Black River is forced through tight, canyon-like channels of billion-year-old rhyolite, creating a natural water park of chutes, pools, and cascading rapids unlike anything else in Missouri.

Swimming in the shut-ins is the main draw — visitors scramble across smooth, dark volcanic rock and slide into cool, clear pools carved over eons. It’s exhilarating without being dangerous, making it a favorite for families and adventurous swimmers alike. Beyond the water, the park offers miles of rugged hiking trails, including the Goggins Mountain Trail and the Shut-Ins Trail, which wind through dense hardwood forest and offer sweeping views of the St. Francois Mountains. The park also carries a dramatic recent history — the 2005 Taum Sauk reservoir breach sent a catastrophic flood through the area, reshaping the landscape. Today, the restored park includes interpretive exhibits about the event and the remarkable ecological recovery that followed.
