Lac qui Parle State Park stretches across 897 acres where the Lac qui Parle and Minnesota Rivers meet in western Minnesota, spanning both Lac qui Parle and Chippewa counties. The park’s name comes from the Dakota phrase meaning “the lake that speaks,” a reference to the sounds of thousands of migrating geese and other waterfowl that gather here each spring and fall.

This is one of Minnesota’s premier birding destinations. The nearby Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area creates a massive corridor for migratory birds, and the park sits right in the middle of it. During peak migration in October and March, tens of thousands of Canada geese, snow geese, and other species fill the skies. Beyond birding, the park offers hiking trails that wind through restored tallgrass prairie, wooded river bottoms, and along the Minnesota River valley. Wildflower displays in late spring and early summer are outstanding.

The park has a campground with both drive-in and walk-in sites, making it a solid base for exploring the surrounding countryside. Fishing in the Minnesota River and Lac qui Parle Lake draws anglers after walleye, northern pike, and catfish. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing keep the trails active through winter.

The best time to visit depends on what draws you: spring and fall for migration spectacles, summer for prairie wildflowers and camping, winter for quiet solitude. Western Minnesota’s wide-open landscape gives the park a sense of space that feels distinctly different from the state’s northern forests.
