Tucked into the remote northwestern corner of Minnesota, Garden Island State Recreation Area spans 715 acres across the wild, island-dotted waters of Lake of the Woods. This is Minnesota at its most untamed — a landscape of boreal forest, rocky shorelines, and sprawling wetlands that feels genuinely far from everything.

What sets Garden Island apart is its isolation. Accessible primarily by boat, the recreation area occupies several islands in the southern reaches of Lake of the Woods, offering a wilderness experience that most Minnesota state lands simply can’t match. The surrounding waters are legendary among anglers chasing walleye, northern pike, and sauger, and the area draws serious fishermen from across the Upper Midwest.

Beyond fishing, the islands reward explorers with hiking through dense stands of birch and spruce, excellent birdwatching — bald eagles and osprey are common overhead — and some of the darkest night skies in the state. Paddlers will find sheltered channels between islands ideal for kayaking and canoeing, with wildlife sightings nearly guaranteed.

Summer — late June through August — is the prime window, when lake conditions are most manageable and daylight stretches past 9 PM. Early September brings fewer visitors and stunning fall color reflected across the water.
