Big Bog State Recreation Area

Spanning 9,170 acres in Beltrami County, Big Bog State Recreation Area protects a portion of the largest peatland in the lower 48 states. The centerpiece is a mile-long boardwalk that extends directly into the bog, giving visitors a rare chance to walk across a landscape most people only read about in ecology textbooks. Sphagnum moss stretches to the horizon, punctuated by stunted tamarack trees and carnivorous sundew plants clinging to the waterlogged surface.

The bog boardwalk is the main draw, but the recreation area offers more than one signature trail. Hiking paths wind through boreal forest where spruce grouse, great gray owls, and moose are regularly spotted. Birdwatchers come specifically for species uncommon elsewhere in Minnesota — boreal chickadees, black-backed woodpeckers, and Connecticut warblers among them. Fishing access points along the Tamarac River provide a quiet alternative to the more popular lakes further south.

Summer is the prime season, with the boardwalk typically open from May through October. Mosquitoes and biting flies are fierce from June through mid-July, so plan accordingly — head nets and long sleeves are standard gear here, not optional. Late July through September offers the most comfortable conditions and peak wildflower displays across the peatland.

Big Bog sits in one of Minnesota’s least-visited corners, which is precisely the appeal. If you want solitude and a landscape unlike anything else in the state, this is where you find it.
