Whitehall State Park
Tucked into the rolling terrain of Middlesex County, Whitehall State Park spans 837 acres of mixed hardwood forest surrounding the scenic Whitehall Reservoir. The reservoir serves as the park’s centerpiece — a pristine, spring-fed body of water that draws visitors year-round for its quiet beauty and excellent fishing opportunities.
Anglers will find the reservoir stocked with trout, largemouth bass, and pickerel, making it one of the more productive fishing spots in the region. A car-top boat launch provides easy access for canoes and kayaks, though motorized boats are prohibited, keeping the water calm and the atmosphere peaceful. Swimming is not permitted in the reservoir, as it serves as a public water supply.
Hikers can explore a network of trails that wind through oak and pine forests, with terrain ranging from gentle lakeside paths to moderately hilly stretches perfect for a solid afternoon outing. Mountain biking is popular on the wider trails, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over in winter months.
The park does not offer camping facilities, so plan your visit as a day trip. Pack a lunch — there are several picnic areas with tables near the water’s edge that make for an ideal midday stop.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when the forest canopy is full and the reservoir reflects the surrounding hills like glass. Autumn brings spectacular foliage, drawing photographers and leaf-peepers from across the region.
