Western Gateway Heritage State Park
Tucked into the heart of North Adams in Berkshire County, Western Gateway Heritage State Park occupies a beautifully restored railroad yard that once served as the western entrance to the Hoosac Tunnel — one of the most ambitious and deadly engineering projects of the 19th century. This compact 8-acre park trades sweeping wilderness for rich industrial history, making it unlike any other state park in Massachusetts.
The centerpiece is the Heritage State Park Visitor Center, housed in former freight yards, where exhibits tell the dramatic story of the Hoosac Tunnel’s construction and the workers who carved nearly five miles through solid rock. The park’s converted railroad buildings also host rotating art exhibitions and community events throughout the year.
Visitors can explore paved walking paths that wind through the historic yard, enjoy picnic areas shaded by mature trees, and browse the on-site shops and galleries that give the complex a lively, village-like atmosphere. The park sits within easy walking distance of downtown North Adams and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), making it a natural stop on any Berkshires itinerary.
The best time to visit is late spring through fall foliage season, when the surrounding Berkshire Hills put on a spectacular show and the park’s outdoor spaces are fully open. Winter visits reward history buffs with quieter exhibits and fewer crowds.
Camping is not available on-site, but nearby options in the Berkshires are plentiful. Come for the history, stay for the charm of this unexpected little park.
