Wahconah Falls State Park

The centerpiece is Wahconah Falls itself — a striking cascade where Wahconah Brook drops roughly 40 feet over a series of layered rock ledges into a broad pool below. What sets this waterfall apart is its unusual orientation: it faces west, meaning late afternoon sunlight pours directly into the gorge, lighting up the falls and mist in a way that makes golden hour here genuinely spectacular.

A short, accessible trail leads from the parking area down to the falls overlook and base — it’s an easy walk suitable for families with young children. The surrounding forest of hemlock and hardwoods keeps the gorge cool even in midsummer, and the rocky streambed above and below the falls invites casual exploration and wading on warm days. Picnic tables near the falls make this an ideal stop for a leisurely lunch with a view.

Fishing is popular along Wahconah Brook, which holds native brook trout. The park doesn’t offer camping facilities, so plan this as a day trip — nearby October Mountain State Forest provides overnight options if you need them.
