Lawrence Heritage State Park

Lawrence Heritage State Park offers something rare among Massachusetts state parks — a deep dive into the gritty, fascinating industrial history that shaped an American city. Spanning 50 acres in Essex County, this urban park tells the story of Lawrence’s immigrant mill workers who powered one of the nation’s largest planned industrial cities in the 19th century.

The park’s centerpiece is its visitor center, housed in a restored boarding house where mill workers once lived. Inside, exhibits trace the waves of immigrants — Irish, French-Canadian, Italian, and others — who came to work the massive textile mills along the Merrimack River. The 1912 Bread and Roses Strike, a landmark moment in American labor history, features prominently. Interactive displays and period artifacts bring these stories to life in a way that resonates with visitors of all ages.

Outside, paved walkways follow the canal system that once powered the mills, making for pleasant strolls with historical context at every turn.
