Perched on the northernmost tip of Cape Ann, Halibut Point State Park packs an outsized punch across its 55 acres. The star attraction is a massive granite quarry — once operated by the Babson Farm Quarry company — now flooded with rainwater and surrounded by interpretive trails that tell the story of the region’s granite industry. But the real draw is the rocky shoreline beyond, where enormous granite slabs tumble into the Atlantic, offering some of the most dramatic coastal views in Massachusetts.
The park sits in Rockport, Essex County, and rewards visitors who come prepared. Wear sturdy shoes — the terrain is uneven granite, not sandy beach. Tidal pools along the shore teem with crabs, snails, and sea urchins, making this a fantastic spot for families willing to scramble over rocks. Birdwatchers flock here during migration season, and on clear days the views stretch to Maine and New Hampshire.
There’s no camping at Halibut Point, but the park is ideal for a half-day visit. Hike the easy loop trail around the quarry, explore the World War II observation tower, and bring a picnic to enjoy on the granite ledges overlooking the ocean. The visitor center in the restored granite cutting shed offers exhibits on quarrying history.
Visit between late spring and early fall for the best conditions. Summer weekends fill the small parking lot quickly — arrive before 10 AM or come on a weekday. The park charges a modest parking fee for non-residents seasonally.
