About This Park

Overview:The Washington Monument is closed until Spring 2019. The Washington Monument dominates the United States Capital skyline as a symbolic tribute to George Washington's military leadership, humble statesmanship, and Presidential fortitude and wisdom. Constructed from marble, granite and gneiss, the Monument is the world's tallest free-standing stone structure, towering more than 555 feet (169 meters). Plans for a national monument began as early as 1783 when the Congre

Perched atop South Mountain in Washington County, Washington Monument State Park holds a singular distinction: it’s home to the first monument completed in honor of George Washington. Built in 1827 by the citizens of nearby Boonsboro, the rugged stone tower rises from the ridgeline and offers panoramic views of the Cumberland, Middletown, and Catoctin valleys — a reward well worth the short climb to its base and up its interior stairs.

The park’s 191 acres straddle the Appalachian Trail, making it a natural stopover for thru-hikers and a prime destination for day hikers exploring the South Mountain corridor. Trails range from easy loops near the monument to more challenging stretches along the AT itself, where rocky terrain and elevation changes keep things interesting. The area is also rich in Civil War history — the Battle of South Mountain unfolded across these ridges in September 1862.

Beyond hiking, visitors come for picnicking among the hardwood forests, seasonal hunting, and some of the best leaf-peeping in western Maryland. The park’s elevated position means fall color arrives early and puts on a vivid show from late September through October — arguably the best time to visit.

Facilities include picnic pavilions, restrooms, and a small museum interpreting the monument’s history. Note that camping availability should be confirmed with Maryland DNR before planning an overnight trip.

Whether you’re chasing views, history, or a quiet stretch of the Appalachian Trail, Washington Monument State Park delivers all three in one compact, rewarding visit.
