Spread across 2,543 acres in Frederick and Washington Counties, this Maryland state park offers a rare blend of Civil War history and Appalachian ridge hiking that few battlefields can match.

The Appalachian Trail passes directly through the park, connecting hikers to Fox’s Gap, Turner’s Gap, and Crampton’s Gap — the three mountain passes where Union forces clashed with Confederate defenders. Interpretive markers and monuments line the trails, letting visitors walk the same ground where soldiers fought for control of the South Mountain passes. The War Correspondents Memorial Arch at Turner’s Gap, built in 1896, stands as the only monument in the country dedicated to journalists killed in wartime.
