South Mountain State Park

Stretching across nearly 7,800 acres of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Frederick and Washington Counties, South Mountain State Park follows the spine of South Mountain along one of Maryland’s most historically significant ridgelines. The Appalachian Trail runs directly through the park, making it a key waypoint for thru-hikers and a destination for day hikers seeking wooded ridge walks with long views into the Cumberland and Middletown Valleys.

The park’s terrain is defined by rocky outcrops, mixed hardwood forests, and a network of trails that range from gentle creek-side paths to steep ridge climbs. Hikers frequently make the trek to Washington Monument — not the famous one, but a squat stone tower built in 1827 that was actually the first completed monument to George Washington. The views from its base stretch across the valley farmland below.

History runs deep here. The Battle of South Mountain in September 1862 was a precursor to Antietam, and interpretive markers along several trails tell that story. Crampton’s Gap, Fox’s Gap, and Turner’s Gap are all accessible within the park boundaries.

Mountain biking and horseback riding are available on designated trails, and hunting is permitted in season on portions of the property. The forested ridgeline offers reliable shade in summer, but fall is the standout season — the hardwood canopy lights up in October and the cooler temperatures make ridge hiking ideal.

South Mountain rewards visitors who come prepared for elevation changes and rocky footing with solitude that’s hard to find this close to the I-70 corridor.
