Rocky Gap State Park
Maryland (Allegany County)
Tucked into the forested ridges of Allegany County in western Maryland, Rocky Gap State Park sprawls across 3,119 acres of rugged Appalachian terrain where Evitts Mountain meets the shores of Lake Habeeb. The park’s centerpiece is this 243-acre lake, carved into a dramatic rocky gorge that gives the park its name — a narrow gap cut through the mountains by Rocky Gap Run.
Lake Habeeb draws swimmers to its sandy beach in summer and anglers year-round chasing largemouth bass, trout, and catfish. The surrounding mountains offer over 15 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy lakeside strolls to steep ridge climbs. The Evitts Homesite Trail rewards with panoramic views of the lake basin below, while the Canyon Overlook Trail delivers a quick but satisfying look into the gorge itself.
Beyond the trails, the park offers boat rentals, a disc golf course, and an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course at the adjacent Rocky Gap Casino Resort — an unusual pairing for a state park. Birders will find warblers and raptors along the forested ridgelines, particularly during spring and fall migration.
The park’s campground sits along the lakeshore with both standard and electric sites available, making it a solid base for a multi-day visit.
Late September through mid-October is the sweet spot — fall color transforms the mountain ridges, summer crowds thin out, and daytime temperatures hover in the comfortable 60s. Spring wildflower season runs a close second.
