Woodmont Natural Resources Management Area
Maryland (Washington County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Washington County, Woodmont Natural Resources Management Area sprawls across 3,425 acres of western Maryland countryside along the Potomac River. This state-managed property offers a quieter alternative to the region’s more trafficked parks, drawing hunters, anglers, and hikers who appreciate having room to roam without the crowds.
The landscape here is a mix of hardwood forests, open fields, and riparian corridors that follow tributaries down to the Potomac. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, and a variety of upland game make Woodmont a well-known destination during Maryland’s hunting seasons — in fact, wildlife management is central to the area’s mission. Outside of hunting season, the same terrain rewards birders and wildlife photographers with sightings of raptors, songbirds, and the occasional bald eagle along the river.
Hiking trails wind through the property’s wooded ridges, offering moderate terrain with seasonal wildflower displays in spring and rich fall foliage from late October through November. Anglers can try their luck in the Potomac and its feeder streams for smallmouth bass and panfish.
Spring and fall are the best times to visit — mild temperatures make for comfortable exploring, and the woods come alive with migrating birds and changing colors. Summers can be humid, but early mornings along the river stay pleasant.
Visitors should come prepared with sturdy footwear, water, and a trail map, as signage can be limited. Check Maryland DNR for current access rules and seasonal restrictions before heading out.
