The park’s centerpiece is a 42-acre man-made lake fed by natural springs, providing some of the clearest swimming water in the state park system — a welcome draw during Maryland’s humid summers.

A sandy beach with a designated swimming area makes this a favorite for families, while anglers work the lake’s edges for largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. Rowboats and canoes are welcome, though no gas-powered motors are permitted, keeping the water calm and the shoreline quiet.

Hikers have access to a segment of the Appalachian Trail, which passes directly through the park, along with several shorter loops that wind through hardwood forests of oak and hickory. The trails offer moderate elevation changes and rewarding ridgeline views, particularly during fall foliage season when the South Mountain corridor lights up in October.

The park operates a campground with both tent and RV sites, many shaded and well-spaced among the trees. Facilities include restrooms, a camp store, and picnic pavilions — solid infrastructure without feeling overly developed.

Spring wildflowers and autumn color make shoulder seasons the most scenic times to visit, though the lake and beach are the main attraction from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Winter brings quieter trails and occasional cross-country skiing when conditions allow.
