Gathland State Park
Maryland (Frederick, Washington County)
Gathland State Park sits at Crampton’s Gap on South Mountain, a 144-acre preserve where Civil War history and Appalachian Trail hiking converge in Frederick and Washington Counties. The park’s centerpiece is the War Correspondents Memorial Arch, the only monument in the world dedicated to journalists who covered armed conflict — built in 1896 by George Alfred Townsend, a prolific Civil War correspondent who made his estate here.
The park occupies the site of the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, fought on September 14, 1862, as Union forces pushed through South Mountain passes ahead of the Battle of Antietam. Interpretive markers guide visitors through the battlefield landscape, and the ruins of Townsend’s once-grand estate — including his home, library, and lodge — dot the wooded hillside.
Hikers pick up the Appalachian Trail directly from the parking area, with routes running north toward Turner’s Gap or south toward Weverton Cliffs, one of the AT’s best overlooks in Maryland. The moderate terrain and well-maintained trails make this an excellent day-hiking destination for families and casual walkers alike.
Spring wildflowers and fall foliage are the prime seasons. The mountain setting stays cooler than the surrounding valleys, and autumn colors along the ridgeline are outstanding. Winter visits offer quiet solitude and clear views through bare trees.
Gathland has picnic facilities and restrooms but no campgrounds on-site. Nearby Greenbrier State Park offers camping for those wanting to extend the trip. Admission is free year-round.
