Deep Creek Lake State Park
Maryland (Garrett County)
Deep Creek Lake State Park sits along the shores of Maryland’s largest freshwater lake in Garrett County, offering 1,169 acres of forested terrain and waterfront access in the state’s westernmost mountains. The park serves as the primary public gateway to Deep Creek Lake, a 3,900-acre reservoir surrounded by the Appalachian highlands of western Maryland.
Swimming is the main draw in summer, with a sandy beach and designated swim area on the lake’s north shore. The water stays refreshingly cool even in July, fed by mountain streams that keep temperatures comfortable when the rest of Maryland swelters. Beyond the beach, the park maintains over a mile of hiking trails through Meadow Mountain, where stands of hemlock and hardwood forest shelter wildlife including wild turkey, black bear, and white-tailed deer.
Fishing draws visitors year-round — the lake holds walleye, yellow perch, largemouth bass, and northern pike. In winter, Garrett County transforms into Maryland’s snow belt, and the park offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow. Wisp Resort, just minutes away, handles the downhill skiing.
The park is best visited between late May and early October, when lake activities are in full swing and the surrounding mountains cycle from wildflower season into one of Maryland’s most vivid fall foliage displays. Weekdays offer significantly more breathing room than summer weekends, when the beach area fills quickly.
Boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding are all accessible from nearby marinas, making Deep Creek Lake State Park a genuine four-season destination in an often-overlooked corner of the Mid-Atlantic.
