Cunningham Falls State Park
Maryland (Frederick County)
Cunningham Falls State Park sits in the Catoctin Mountains of Frederick County, Maryland, spanning 6,157 acres of forested ridgelines, rocky streams, and one showstopping waterfall. The park’s centerpiece — Cunningham Falls — is a 78-foot cascading waterfall, the largest in the state of Maryland. The short but rocky trail to the falls draws visitors year-round, though the scene is at its best in autumn when the surrounding hardwoods light up in orange and gold.
The park is split into two areas. The William Houck Area centers on Hunting Creek Lake, a 43-acre lake with a swimming beach, boat rentals, and stocked fishing. The Manor Area, quieter and less crowded, offers hiking trails through old-growth forest and the ruins of a historic iron furnace — the Catoctin Iron Furnace, which operated from the late 1700s through the Civil War era.
Hikers have access to trails ranging from easy lakeside loops to steeper climbs along Cat Rock and the Catoctin Trail, which connects to neighboring Catoctin Mountain Park. Birdwatching, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing round out the activity list depending on the season.
Camping is available with sites suitable for tents and RVs, plus a handful of camper cabins for those who want a roof overhead. Summer weekends fill quickly, so reservations are worth making early.
Spring wildflower season and peak fall foliage in mid-October are the best windows to visit. Winter brings solitude and frozen falls worth the cold.
