Assateague State Park
Maryland (Worcester County)
About This Park
The Assateague Island Visitor Center is located in the Maryland District of Assateague Island before the Verrazzano Bridge entrance into the park. The Assateague Island Visitor Center is open daily from 9 am - 4 pm.
Assateague State Park occupies 855 acres of pristine barrier island along Maryland’s Atlantic coast in Worcester County, offering one of the mid-Atlantic’s most unique beach experiences. What sets it apart is immediate: wild horses roam freely across the dunes, marshes, and shoreline — descendants of horses that have lived on Assateague Island for centuries. Watching a band of ponies graze against an ocean backdrop is the kind of moment that stays with you.
The park’s two miles of oceanfront beach draw swimmers, surfers, and sunbathers from spring through fall. Beyond the sand, paddlers explore the calm bayside waters by kayak or canoe, winding through salt marshes teeming with herons, egrets, and osprey. Fishing is productive both in the surf and from the bay, with flounder, bluefish, and striped bass running seasonally. Birders will find Assateague exceptional — over 300 species have been recorded on the island.
The campground offers 350 sites nestled behind the dunes, many within a short walk of the beach. Sites accommodate tents and RVs, and the sound of waves carries through camp at night. Reservations are essential for summer weekends and fill quickly once booking opens.
Visit between late May and mid-October for the best beach weather. September is ideal — smaller crowds, warm water, and pleasant evenings. Bring insect repellent during summer months, as mosquitoes and biting flies are part of barrier island life. No admission fee is charged for Maryland residents.
