Charlestown State Park stretches across 5,100 acres of rugged, rolling terrain along the Ohio River in Clark County, Indiana. Established in 1996, the park occupies land that once served as the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, and that military history adds a layer of intrigue to an already compelling landscape.

The park’s defining feature is Fourteen Mile Creek, which carves dramatic bluffs and narrow gorges through the property before emptying into the Ohio River. Trail 3, which follows the creek to its confluence with the river, ranks among the most scenic day hikes in southern Indiana. The park maintains over 20 miles of trails total, ranging from easy riverside walks to steep, challenging routes that reward hikers with sweeping river valley views.

Beyond hiking, Charlestown draws visitors for mountain biking on dedicated trail systems, fishing along the creek and riverbank, and picnicking at sheltered areas throughout the park. Birders appreciate the diverse habitat where upland forest meets riparian corridors, making spring and fall migration seasons particularly rewarding.

Camping availability has not been confirmed for current seasons, so check directly with the park office before planning an overnight stay.

The best time to visit is mid-April through late October. Spring wildflowers blanket the forest floor in impressive displays, while autumn transforms the hardwood canopy into a showcase of color visible from the blufftop overlooks.
